Grant will help staff SROs in Berkeley County’s elementary schools

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Berkeley County Council approved accepting another grant to cover school resource officers in elementary schools.

The sheriff’s office said they have 15 school resource officers in elementary schools within the district. A state grant will help fund those SROs.

Berkeley County began staffing SROs in every school across the district roughly three years ago thanks to state funding. Before that, only middle and elementary schools had an SRO.

“Thanks to the state government and the governor’s office, we were able to get school resource officers in all of our schools,” said Capt. Matthew Woodall with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. “The school district funded positions in middle school and high school, not elementary. So, the state recognized the importance of having an officer in every school.

Berkeley County currently has one school resource officer position available. If you are interested in applying, contact the sheriff’s office.
