Berkeley County to host a series of public meetings focused on infrastructure, projects, and public safety

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Berkeley County will host a series of meetings aimed at letting people know where the county stands in terms of public safety, infrastructure, and finances.

The meetings will be hosted by Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb and Sheriff Duane Lewis throughout the county next month where they will also answer questions from the community.

“We’re gonna take a tour of the county throughout October,” said Supervisor Cribb. “Berkeley County is a large county… county council meets twice a month and it’s not easy to get here all the time, especially for busy families […]  We’re going to go seven different locations throughout the county and try to bring the information to the residents a little closer to home.”

There will be community meetings at Stratford, Phillip Simmons, Berkeley, Timberland, Cane Bay, and Hanahan high schools. There will also be a meeting at Daniel Island School.

“I’ll give an update on the county finances, also public safety. We’ll talk a lot about the penny program for roads and infrastructure. That always gets the most interest. And we’ll talk about a lot of the different capital projects that we got going on as a county,” he explained.

Each meeting will take place from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The first hour is a presentation by the supervisor and the sheriff, then an hour of questions, answers, and discussions.

“We’ve got a lot of people moving into Berkeley County and they may not know or understand what their sheriff does or what county government does for them. This is an opportunity for them to have an open forum, transparent, and with a lot of information,” said Sheriff Lewis.

This is even a great place to let the sheriff know about things like crime and drug concerns in your community.

Employees of various county departments will be there to answer your specific questions.

“A lot of questions are going center around traffic enforcement, the problems with speeding, aggressive driving, reckless driving. We get those complaints every day,” the sheriff added.

The seven meetings will take place on the following dates and locations:

  • Tuesday, October 1st at Stratford High School auditorium
  • Wednesday, October 2nd at Phillip Simmons High School auditorium
  • Monday, October 7th at Berkeley High School auditorium
  • Tuesday, October 15th at Timberland High School auditorium
  • Wednesday, October 16th at Cane Bay High School auditorium
  • Tuesday, October 29th at Daniel Island School multipurpose room
  • Wednesday, October 30th at Hanahan High School auditorium

Each meeting takes place from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
