‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Exclusive: Gianni Paolo Feels Brayden Has “Leveled-Up” In The Drug Game

Since season one of Power Book II: Ghost, Brayden (Gianni Paolo) has been trying to establish himself as a reliable right hand to Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) and to be taken seriously in the drug game. In the show’s final season, Brayden definitely made some moves to let Riq, Noma (Caroline Chikezie), and the Tejada clan know he is not a joke.

Cassius Life’s Bernard “Beanz” Smalls spoke with Gianni Paolo ahead of Power Book II: Ghost’s final two episodes. During our conversation, we touched on his character’s toxic relationship, leveling up in the drug game, how working on the show has helped him grow as an actor, and, of course, those hilarious nicknames Cane (Woody McClain) always has for Brayden.

Step into the interview below.

Gianni Paolo Says Brayden Just Needed Someone Not Named Riq To Confide In

Brayden’s love history on the show has been fascinating, to say the least. We all know he’s gotta thing for chocolate hooking up with Kiki (Moriah Brown) and his latest boo, Elle (Talia Robinson).

Unfortunately, both relationships don’t work out, with the latter being a toxic one, driving Brayden to abuse cocaine. Paolo explained to Cassius Life that Brayden’s

“I just think he needs someone, Paolo begins. “I just think that going through, I mean, especially this life, obviously he can’t confide in Tariq, because anytime he tries to express any little bit of softness or, “I’m going through this,” “I don’t want to hear that. I don’t want to hear that.” I guess he just needs that in someone. Every season besides the second, he always finds someone to do that with, whether he tells them everything or tells them a little bit. I feel like Brayden needs someone to confide in every season.”

Gianni Paolo Reveals He Does Not Confide In Women Like Brayden

We also got personal, asking Paolo if he was ever involved in a toxic relationship, Brayden. The actor revealed that in that area, he is nothing like the character he portrays on the show.

“Honestly, not really. I feel like I’m the opposite. I don’t confide in women. Brayden is someone who just confides in women. I’m the opposite. I confide in the boys, and then I keep everything hidden from the woman,” says Paolo. “That’s how I operate. I’m the opposite of Brayden in that sense. There’s been some friends and some people, obviously, growing up, getting in some shit with. Yeah, that happens, but that’s also with being young.”

He continues, “You have to think. Brayden’s still in college, so where we see Ghost and Tommy is ten years after that, 15, 20 years after that. Brayden and Tariq are going through all of those mistakes now, which we didn’t see Ghost and Tommy go through. They’re going through those mistakes now, and then eventually, if they survive, that’s where they’ll end up and hopefully make better decisions.”

Brayden Has Finally Leveled-Up

Throughout Power Book II: Ghost’s four seasons, we all watched as Brayden tried to prove his gangster to not only Riq, Cane, and everyone else.

Speaking with Paolo about his character trying to make a name for himself, the actor revealed that he feels that Brayden finally leveled up this season but did show signs that he was about that life in previous seasons.

“It’s funny because I felt like the arrival was killing Uncle Lucas, and then when he saved Tariq in Noma’s warehouse. I felt like that was like, “Okay, Brayden’s in this life. He killed his own family member. He’s in this,” Paolo said. “Then I feel like when that happened, that’s a new level. Yeah, he leveled up. He’s in this for the long run. He’s not afraid of anyone. He’s ready to do this. I think, yeah, that moment was probably one of the biggest moments in Brayden’s life”

Power Has Done More For Paolo Than Any Acting Class

Power Book II: Ghost was more than just a job for these young actors; it was a learning experience. Like Lovell Adams-Gray, who told us the show was his Julliard, Paolo feels this show taught him more than any acting class could ever have.

“Oh, my God. No acting class, no anything, could have ever done what this show has done for me. I’ve gotten to do everything. I’ve gotten to do love scenes, sex scenes, murder scenes. You name it, I have done it on Power. Comedy, drama. I mean, this really was just like a crash course,” Paolo said. “Now, every time I get a new audition, I’m like, “Oh, this is a walk in the park compared to some days that I’ve had on Power.” No acting class could have ever prepared me or done what the show has done for me. I believe most of probably the other actors on the show feel the same way.”

Paolo Says He Embraces Woody McClain’s Nicknames For Brayden

To close out our conversation, we touched on those hilarious nicknames that Cane always has for Brayden. Paolo revealed to us that he loves them and feels they are essential to the show’s success.

“Look, I did stand-up, and I’ve been involved in comedy podcasting before I was on Power. My brain’s a comedy writer, which is also how Brayden became who he was because that’s who I am in my own brain,” Paolo begins. “When Woody does it on set, it makes me laugh; I absolutely love it. Obviously, it makes Brayden look a little weaker, but I don’t have an ego like that, and I’m like, “Whoa, my character needs to be strong.” I’m like, “No.” I think it’s really funny, and it’s good for the show.

He continued, “A lot of times I’m in a scene, and I’m like, “What’s not best for me? What’s best for the show?” Every time Woody or Cane would say that to Brayden, it would go crazy on social media, and I love that. I think it’s so much fun. Personally, sometimes I’ll go up to him and be like, “Well, this one would be funny too.” We’ll work together, but I’ll say 99% of them that make it all come from Woody. He knows what he wants to say.”
