U.S. Presidents Listed From Oldest to Youngest (+ Trump Becomes Oldest President-Elect)

The start of the 2024 presidential election—Trump vs. Biden—undoubtedly carried an undercurrent of uncertainty regarding both candidates’ ages and abilities. From stalling on stage to rambling rants, citizens and political commentators couldn’t help but notice what seemed to be cognitive declines.
While 35 is the minimum age to qualify for U.S. presidency, there is no maximum. 19 inaugurations have involved presidents in their 60s and just four have involved presidents in their 70s. The median age for U.S. presidents on their first day in office is 55, according to Pew Research.

As for the longest-living president in history, Jimmy Carter holds the record. Carter, the nation’s 39th president, celebrated his 100th birthday on Oct. 1, 2024. He is in hospice care at his Georgia residence.

With the 2024 election results officially being announced this morning, Donald Trump becomes the oldest president-elect at 78 years old. Currently, the two oldest presidents previously sworn into office are Biden (78 on his 2021 Inauguration Day) and Trump (70 on his 2017 Inauguration Day).
