Civilian driver ejected from vehicle during crash with Charleston County EMS unit
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A driver was ejected from their vehicle amid a rollover crash that involved a Charleston County EMS unit.
Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded to North Highway 17 near South Santee Road around 4 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of a county vehicle involved in a crash with injuries.
The unit was on its way to a nonemergent medical call when it changed lanes to turn onto Rutledge Road from Highway 17, according to an initial investigation by the sheriff’s office.
A civilian vehicle then struck the rear passenger side of the EMS unit, causing the civilian vehicle to roll over into the median. Deputies said the unrestrained driver was ejected through the sunroof.
Emergency crews took the driver to a nearby hospital. Their condition is unknown.
Deputies said the EMS unit was not transporting any patients at the time of the crash, nor were its lights or sirens being used.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
