Charlotte airport workers strike during Thanksgiving travel season
CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, Charlotte Douglas airport workers are on strike over poverty wages and unfair labor practices as of 5 a.m. on Monday, November 25.
Workers started to vote on Friday on whether to strike. The airport service workers are employed by American Airlines contractors, ABM and Prospect.
“We’re on strike today because this is our last resort. We can’t keep living like this. We’re taking action because our families can’t survive,” an ABM cabin cleaner Priscilla Hoyle said.
This Thanksgiving travel season is expected to be the busiest on record, with approximately 1.02 million passengers projected to depart from CLT between Thursday, Nov. 21, and Monday, Dec. 2.
Service workers were set to walk off the job starting at 5 a.m. They will be joined by fellow service workers across industries, Workers United, the Union of Southern Service Workers, allies and elected officials who plan to rally at 11 a.m. Afterward, they will host a ‘Strikesgiving’ meal in place of Thanksgiving.
