USDA investigates Alpha Genesis for possible Animal Welfare Act violations
YAMASSEE, S.C. (WCBD) – The USDA is investigating the Alpha Genesis Facility, where 43 monkeys escaped earlier this month, after allegations of animal mistreatment.
USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service officials confirmed that they received a complaint with detailed allegations, which they are currently reviewing to assess potential violations of the Animal Welfare Act at the facility.
According to PETA, they received multiple whistleblower reports indicating that a diesel heater may have malfunctioned at the facility late Friday night. “There were no alarms, no alerts, as 20 long-tailed macaques likely endured agonizing deaths,” the report followed.
