Summerville community gathers for Greenwave sendoff

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – There was a sea of green at Hutchinson Square as community members gathered for a special send-off for the Summerville High School football team.

Summerville Greenwave boarded buses and hit the road to South Carolina State University where they will take on Dutch Fork in the state championship game.

Hundreds of people lined Main Street downtown and cheered for the team as they passed through. “Everyone is out here, we’re supporting, we’re happy for the team,” said Tiffany Horton, whose son is a wide receiver for the Greenwave.

“The boys have done outstanding this year so we’re so excited to see them bring home the championship title,” she said.

Amy Elrod’s son is a senior kicker for the team.  “He’s super excited to go to state today,” she said. “They are super excited to win.”

Elrod praised the coaching team for their efforts this season and said there has been great comradery throughout the team. “Coach Rafferty has built that, and Coach Magwood has helped to instill a winning mindset,” she said.

“This is great to watch everybody come out here and support the team. It’s just a way of living here in Summerville,” Elrod said of the community’s support.

Summerville Greenwave has not played for a state title since 2007. They defeated Sumter 35-6 for the 5A Division 1 Lower State title last Friday night and advanced to the championship game.

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at South Carolina State University’s Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
