My First Time: Chico Bean Remembers His First $100 Check Doing Comedy

Getting money as a standup comedian is no easy feat, which is why we give all praises due to the many kings and queens of comedy within our culture. One great example is Washington D.C. funnyman Chico Bean, who took a quick break from The 85 South Show Podcast to join us this week on “My First Time” and tell a throwback tale about his early days of making a living through making the world laugh.

Taking us back a decade-and-a-half to 2009 — the Inauguration of former President Barack Obama, to be exact! — the Wild ‘n Out standout recalls being subjected to a very awkward (see: racist) situation while doing his best to tell a simple political joke. Even though our guy was eventually able to keep up an unfazed facade long enough to finish his set and get paid, we can only hope the rising Black comics of today in Mount Airy, North Carolina are having more luck with their careers in 2024! At the very least, an extra c-note is deserved if you’ve got to be subjected to a bar filled with N-Word-loving bikers, right?
