WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – A man was critically injured Monday afternoon when his vehicle crashed into Ireland Creek and overturned in the shallow water.

Colleton County Fire Rescue said witnesses watched as the man’s small SUV slowly drove over the embankment and into the creek around 1 p.m. The car then overturned, pinning the driver in his vehicle with his head underwater.

The two witnesses, who saw the crash from the nearby Ollie’s parking lot, jumped into action and entered the cold water to begin efforts to rescue the man.
