Man pinned inside SUV after vehicle rolled into Ireland Creek and overturned: CCFR
WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – A man was critically injured Monday afternoon when his vehicle crashed into Ireland Creek and overturned in the shallow water.
Colleton County Fire Rescue said witnesses watched as the man’s small SUV slowly drove over the embankment and into the creek around 1 p.m. The car then overturned, pinning the driver in his vehicle with his head underwater.
The two witnesses, who saw the crash from the nearby Ollie’s parking lot, jumped into action and entered the cold water to begin efforts to rescue the man.
Walterboro officers began to arrive, and they all worked together to free the victim. He was eventually airlifted to the trauma center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston where he remains in critical condition.
Fire-Rescue officials said the man’s dog was also in the vehicle, but the animal did not appear to be injured. Animal services took custody of the dog.
The Walterboro Police Department is investigating the crash.
