Warming shelters open amid very cold temperatures
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Shelters will be open across the Lowcountry this week as cold temperatures settle into the area. The shelters will provide a warm place to sleep for those without adequate heat, or who may be experiencing homelessness.
Overnight temperatures are expected to be in the lower 30s and upper 20s.
SUMMERVILLE
Seacoast Church will open its warming center Monday through Thursday this week.
The church is located at 301 E. 5th N. Street and will welcome guests from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Times are adjusted for Wednesday which is 9 a.m. until 7 a.m.
The warming center entrance and bus stop are located at the back door facing Gum Street.
A cot with linens and a pillow will be provided along with a warm dinner, hot showers, and a takeaway breakfast.
WALTERBORO
St. Jude’s Church in Walterboro will open all week for people seeking shelter from the cold.
The shelter is located at 907 Wichman Street in the Skardon Hall building. Guests will be welcome from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m.
Women, men, and families are welcome. Pets cannot be accommodated.
MOUNT PLEASANT
Hibben Hospitality Shelter, located at 690 Coleman Blvd., will open Monday and Tuesday from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m.
Guests will have a warm place to sleep and an evening meal and breakfast in the morning. Showers are available with towels, soap, and shampoo.
People will not be allowed to enter after 11 p.m. unless advance arrangements have been made or an official brings them in.
Hibben will pick up guests needing transportation at 68 Columbus Street at 6:45 p.m., and CARTA will take guests back downtown the following morning.
“Any guests arriving early must wait outside until the hospitality crew gives them approval to enter at approximately 7:15 p.m. Note that all bags are examined, and prohibited items removed and returned upon departure,” said shelter organizers.
A decision to open the shelter on any other night will be made 48 hours in advance.
