T.I. and Tiny’s OMG Girlz court debacle continues, as their settlement has been cut by the judge to $17.8 million from the original $71.4 million (as previously reported). On Monday Jan. 6th, the judge tentatively adjusted the ruling, deciding to eliminate $53 million in punitive damages.

“Here, the evidence shows that, at most, MGA and (owner and founder Isaac) Larian were negligent about investigating an alleged claim of infringement, but not that they acted with reckless indifference or willfulness,” U.S. District Judge James Selna wrote.

The lawsuit centered around claims that MGA’s L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. dolls were designed to mimic the distinct look, style, and image of T.I. and Tiny’s girl group, the OMG Girlz (including group members Bahja Rodriguez, Breaunna Womack and Tiny’s eldest daughter, Zonnique Pullins). Initially, the jury found that MGA infringed on the OMG Girlz’s likeness, with several dolls appearing identical to several of the group’s looks at “specific public events.” Although the jury reached a verdict—in favor of Tiny and T.I.—the process is far from over.

“The [ink] hasn’t even been dried yet…after that, [he has] 30 days after that to appeal. I’m saying [there’s a] 95% [chance] he’s going to appeal, however that appeal may look better for us [because] there were some other things we got cut [of…like] the OMG trademark.” -Tiny Harris (September 2024)
