Lowcountry police chief resigns, town officials say
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – The Town of Moncks Corner’s police chief has resigned to pursue a position at a different law enforcement agency, town officials said Thursday.
Chief Stephen Young’s last day in office will be Feb. 7. After that, he will assume a command position at a separate local agency.
Chief Young started working as a lieutenant for the Moncks Corner Police Department in 2018 before rising through the ranks and being named chief in February 2023.
“I will be forever grateful that I was afforded the opportunity to serve the Moncks Corner community as its Chief of Police and lead such a talented group of people in the department. The support I’ve experienced from the men and women of the agency, the community, the Mayor and Council, and the Town staff has been amazing, and this is why our agency has experienced so much success. I am confident that the Police Department will continue on this path of success by serving the community with a commitment to professionalism, excellence, and caring.” said Chief Young.
Chief Young spearheaded the formation of the department’s traffic unit, which includes motorcycle officers. In addition to the traffic unit, Chief Young redeveloped the recruitment and retention strategy, leading to staffing improvements, and focused on emphasizing community engagement.
Once Chief Young exits, Captain Lee Mixon Jr. will take over as interim chief.
