Experts Say Leaving These Items In Your Car During Cold Temps Is Bad Idea
Dangerously cold temperatures are sweeping the country, including areas that haven’t seen snow in years.
Experts warn that, much like when temperatures are excessively hot, certain items shouldn’t remain in your vehicle when temps plummet.
Keep scrolling to see what you shouldn’t keep in your car during this American deep freeze!
Electronics
This one should go without saying, but freezing temperatures and electronics do not go hand-in-hand. Cell phones, tablets, laptops, smart watches and more electronic items can all be damaged when temps drop. In some cases, the damage done by cold weather could void any warranty the electronic item may have had.
Pets
Another one that should leave little doubt, but our domesticated furry friends may face adverse health issues if left in a freezing car. Our pets, just like us humans, could face hypothermia if exposed to dangerously low temperatures for too long.
Liquids
It’s important to remember that liquids, when frozen, expand. This is why city crews are forced to plug potholes after winter – water gets into the cracks of pavement, freezes, opens the crack wider, and sometimes breaks into a pothole. The same can happen to bottled water, juice or soda. If there isn’t enough room inside the container for the liquid to expand, then the container may break and leave you with quite the mess to clean once it thaws.
Aerosol cans
According to USA Today, aerosol cans can become unstable under extreme temperatures. In some cases, these cans may even explode.
Medications
Medications are another item that shouldn’t be frozen. According to Bay State Health, “Medicine shouldn’t be frozen, so be careful of leaving it in a car or other really cold place. For example, insulin, which is a protein, can become unstable when frozen.”
It’s recommended that if medication is accidently frozen it’s best to have it replaced as soon as possible.
