Murrells Inlet VFW Post faces $200K in building repairs, asks for community help to continue operating
MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (WBTW) — A pillar of the local veteran community is asking for help to keep the organization going.
VFW Post 10420 in Murrells Inlet says it’s in desperate need of donations or skill sets to renovate and repair parts of the building.
It’s known as the ‘friendliest post on the coast’. It serves the veteran population every day. But with insurance rates spiking and the building growing old, members say it’s struggling.
“It’s a big cost and, you know, any contribution is welcome,” Sal Salvino, VFW Post 10420 commander said.
If you’ve been down Highway 17 Bypass in Murrells Inlet, you may recognize the building with the American flag mural.
On the outside it looks quiet, but when you step inside, people of all ages and all different backgrounds sharing one thing in common, their service to our country.
The building has sat there since the 50’s and in 1986, it became a place many veterans call their second home.
“I can talk to another service person and just ask them questions about little stupid things that we did in the service and so many fun things,” member Micaela Kincade said.
“You know, there’s a lot of tough things have gone on in the military,” junior vice commander Heidi Phillips said. “So, to be able to have a place or a group that you can consistently be a part of is very important to a lot of veterans.”
The 70-year-old building that provides much-needed resources for veterans is now in desperate need of repairs.
From live oak tree roots growing out of control, the kitchen fridge rusting. plumbing and leaks in the roof, they’re looking at about a $200,000 price tag.
The outside memorial honoring fallen service members in need of help too.
Salvino says they’re doing the best they can, with what they have.
“We have, you know, veterans from all different branches with lots of different skill sets,” he said. “And so anywhere we can, we deploy them to help us out. But a lot of our members are getting up in age as well so that’s another challenge we have.”
Salvino says any donations or skills are welcome. He hopes repairs keep the post going for the next generation.
He says they’re holding a raffle and silent auction for a fundraiser on Feb. 7th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. You can drop off donations, cash or checks at the post located at 4359 US-17 N in Murrells Inlet.
