SLED investigating second inmate death at Lowcountry detention center this month

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A second inmate has died while incarcerated at the Dorchester County detention center this month, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office announced.

A 49-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at the L.C. Knight Detention Center Wednesday. Deputies immediately began first-aid until EMS responded and took over life-saving measures.

The unidentified inmate passed away. The sheriff’s office has requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigate the incident.

On Jan. 6, the sheriff’s office reported that a 47-year-old male inmate died after having a medical episode at the detention center.

The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the deceased.
