Sullivan’s Island beachgoers welcome planned beach access improvements

SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – The Town of Sullivan’s Island plans to work on improving beach access points ahead of this summer.

In a public facilities committee meeting, officials gave an update on the beach boardwalk repairs and replacement project. They identified stations 18, 23, 24, 26 and 28 as high priority items to bring them to ADA compliance or make additional replacements.

“I performed a wedding for son here in the year 2003. We had to carry my wife, she was in a wheelchair back then, carry her to the beach, but this is a lot better than back then. So I’m very grateful for that,” Ted Caudill, a beachgoer, said.

This comes as beach season is quickly approaching and the town aims to provide visitors with easy access along each street.

“I think it’s pretty important, we’re pretty frequent beachgoers being residents of Mount Pleasant. We’re here probably three times a week,” Alex McCullugah, a frequent beachgoer, said. “It would be pretty nice to have really easy access to be able to get to the beach and make it really accessible for everyone to enjoy what we love to enjoy.”

Officials said they are planning to use a material that will last much longer on the boardwalks, allowing for less repairs to be made in the future.

“It’s already pretty good, but there could be more such boardwalks with this sort of access,” Marcy Brenner, a beachgoer, said. “I like this boardwalk because it’s actual wood. The ones that are plastic wood get so hot, they burn your feet. So if you could stay with the old wood, actual wood, that would be better.”
