Suspect killed in deputy-involved shooting identified; SLED investigating
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – State agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Berkeley County that left a 26-year-old man dead, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division announced Tuesday.
Deputies responded to a hospital on Thursday, Jan. 29 after receiving a 911 call about a man who was injured with a gun and had been stabbed, SLED said.
When they arrived, deputies encountered an armed man behind a nearby home in the area of Slow Hand Lane and Whitesville Road in Moncks Corner.
The suspect tried to flee the scene, and a deputy fired, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office identified the suspect as Nathan Johnson. Johnson died at the scene.
SLED was requested to investigate by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said the deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave, per protocol, while SLED conducts its investigation.
No law enforcement officers were injured from the situation.
