The Assembly at Goose Creek will pair city offices with event space
GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCBD) – Goose Creek is growing, and so too is the need for more space at city hall. City leaders are moving forward with a plan to construct a new facility that will double as a city office and event space.
The Assembly at Goose Creek will be constructed on the lake next to the current city hall building.
“The population has gone up steadily. When this municipal center was built, we were at about 29,000. We’re over 50,000 today,” said Frank Johnson, the city’s public information officer.
When the current city hall was built about 25 years ago, the comprehensive plan included the expansion that is now being called “The Assembly at Goose Creek.”
“As the population has increased, so has our city staff to serve those residents in all departments,” said Johnson.
The city has the $13 million needed for the project. In addition to adding some additional office space in the new building, the current city council chamber will be converted to office space. The new council chamber will be able to be used for events when there’s not a council meeting taking place.
“There is a lack of event spaces in the city, so we decided that it would make sense to build an event space here that can host weddings, events, family, reunions, all sorts of activities a space that we will also use,” said Johnson.
The city believes by renting out the space, the ongoing maintenance costs of the new facility could be paid for with those funds. There will also be a large open porch overlooking the lake.
“It’s going to be great and everybody’s going to love it,” said Johnson. “It’s going to be a much-needed space and a gathering space for the community.”
A groundbreaking for the project is being planned for next month. The city hopes to have the building open in 2026.
