Charleston International Airport begins construction on new parking garage

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)– A multi-million dollar construction project is underway at the Charleston International Airport.

Over 300 million dollars is being invested at the airport by creating a six-story parking garage to meet passengers ‘ growing demand, a concern officials said has been challenging for a while.

“One of the biggest issues we have is parking. Individuals are Ubering or finding other ways to get here, so we decided to focus on a new parking garage because as we move into the expansion of the airport, parking is becoming more of an issue, so this new parking garage is step one of our growth plans,” said John Williams director of capital projects for Charleston County Aviation.

In October, crews broke ground on the 2.4 million square feet garage. The project will include over 5700 parking spaces, options for rental car service and operations, enhanced lighting, electric vehicle charging, and eco-friendly features.

Wayne Hackamack, a valet worker for the airport, told News 2 that he believes this new addition will benefit travelers, especially during severe weather.

“The expansion will benefit the people because it gives them more options to park. All the cars will be covered .. the parking garage is uncovered, and a lot of people get wet, which is not fun, so it will be beneficial to get your cars in the garage, said Hackamack.”

Officials said they hope this new expansion will cause fewer headaches and more happiness when coming to Charleston International Airport.

“Building this parking garage will close some parking headaches. We have done a lot to minimize those, and the quicker we can get this built, the more parking will be here for our people and the happier our passengers will be,” said Williams.

Officials said they anticipate completing the multi-million-dollar project by the end of the second quarter in 2027.
