Man charged with reckless homicide after body found in Mount Pleasant pond

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) — A 40-year-old man is facing charges after another man was found dead in a Mount Pleasant pond last weekend.

Herbert Lamont Singleton was arrested on March 3 and charged with reckless homicide, according to the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

Officers responded to Wando Park Boulevard on March 1 around 2:35 a.m. to reports of a vehicle in the water.

Divers entered the pond but were unable to determine if anyone was inside. Divers with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office also responded and confirmed the vehicle was unoccupied before helping remove it from the water.

Authorities said there was evidence that an occupant got out of the pond and left the area, but attempts to locate the individual were unsuccessful.

Divers returned to the site later that afternoon and recovered a body, which the coroner’s office later identified as 31-year-old Devante White.

A preliminary investigation determined that Singleton was driving the vehicle when it reportedly crashed into the pond.

Singleton is being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center on a $225,000 bond.
