‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Exclusive: London Brown Talks Marvin’s Evolution, Loves That Fans Don’t See Him As A “One Note” Character
Uncle Marvin has come a long way since season one of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and that evolution continues for the character who has become a fan favorite. Actor London Brown is here for it.
Don’t get it twisted. Marvin will still take you out if instructed or if you dare cross him or any member of the Thomas family, but he has also shown he has a heart as big as his stomach.
Thanks to court-appointed therapy and some reality checks along the way, Marvin has come to look at things through a new lens, and he is not as hot-tempered as he used to be.

He has even become a better father, accepting of his daughter’s lifestyle, who she chooses to love and is supportive of everything she does. But he is still a lethal enforcer in the Thomas drug operation, and still gets things done when Raq or other people like Tony Danza’s Stefano make small requests for him to carry out.

Ahead of the season 4 premiere of the show, which is now live on the Starz app, CASSIUSLife’s Bernard “Beanz” Smalls spoke with Brown about Marvin’s arc, and the actor revealed he loves the newfound appreciation fans are giving him.
I like the fact that the audience has realized that Marvin isn’t one note.
He continues, “Then season two, when he started to slow down and breathe, people was like, ‘All right, I think he at least trying.’ And then he got to season three, the mailman scene, that’s when the streets was like, ‘Okay, we get it.’ But the fact that I can feel the audience going on this journey with Marvin, lets me know that I think they really understand him. So in season four, it’s just another side of Marvin we haven’t seen in the first three seasons. So as far as to your question, the highlight is the energy from the streets, that’s letting me know people understand Marvin.”
Marvin’s Loyalty Will Be Tested

Marvin is also becoming a bit more ambitious this season as he begins to realize his importance and value, especially when mob boss Stefano whispers in his ear how great he is.
We asked Brown if Marvin’s loyalty to his family, especially Raq (Patina Miller), will be tested this season, and he expressed that his character is seeking validation that he isn’t getting from his sister.
“I think it’s been tested. Every time that Raq and the family —Lou as well—decided to try to son Marvin. Even though Marvin was extremely loyal, the fact that Stefano was able to acknowledge Marvin’s good work, and the fact that Marvin respects him. And Marvin knows that Raq respects him and to get that recognition allows Marvin to say, ‘You know what? Maybe I need to shift my energy elsewhere where I’m appreciated,’ and we get to see that this season.”
All we know is, Uncle Marvin better make it through the season, or we will riot. Keep it locked on CASSIUSLife for more Raising Kanan interviews, like our exclusive chat with Joey Bada$$.
