22 animals saved from ‘deplorable conditions,’ charges expected

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Twenty-two animals were saved from “deplorable conditions” in Cottageville this week.

Colleton County Animal Services received a tip from a concerned citizen about a home on Running Creek Lane. The caller said they thought there were animals at the home, but they hadn’t seen anyone at the property for a while.

When officers arrived on Wednesday, they smelled a strong odor. Responders then looked through a window and saw four live dogs and several deceased animals in the room filled with cages.

A warrant was obtained, and with the assistance of Colleton County deputies and the Cottageville police chief, law enforcement returned. Twenty-two animals were seized from the property.

“All of the animals now have a chance at loving home and are receiving the care they deserve,” said Colleton County Animal Service Director Laura Clark. “We are grateful for the swift and coordinated efforts of the sheriff’s office, Cottageville PD, and our rescue partners to ensure the wellbeing of these animals.”

The person connected to this situation said they picked up some of the animals as stray. Officials urge anyone searching for a missing pet to come forward, as they may have been at the home.

Criminal charges are expected, the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office said. An investigation is ongoing.
