Should Donald Trump Be Removed From ‘Home Alone 2’?

There are a few things you can always count on when it comes to the holiday season: pumpkin spice-flavored everything, bright lights adorning the windows of your local shopping area and somewhere, on some channel, a broadcast of the Macaulay Culkin-starring Christmas film, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York.

Since it first arrived in theaters back in 1992 a week before Thanksgiving, the classic comedy has gone on to amass a worldwide cult following that’s grown substantially as each generation is introduced to 10-year-old Kevin McCallister and his ability to thwart a pair of criminals all while living large throughout Midtown on his own. Aside from the obvious Christmas cheer it evokes, Home Alone 2 has also been recognized as a sort of ode to classic New York City. From Kevin’s taxi ride on the Queensboro Bridge to his unforgettable stay at The Plaza Hotel, some have enjoyed watching it year-round strictly for a love of the scenery. However, one tie-in has been a recent topic of controversy as it relates to the infamous cameo by now-President Donald Trump.

Miss it if you blink, director Chris Columbus now says looking back that he’d clip the seven-second scene altogether if it was up to him.

Take a look below at what Columbus said exactly in regards to his feelings about Trump appearing in Home Alone 2, via The San Francisco Chronicle:

“‘We screened the film in Chicago, and when that moment came onscreen the audience went crazy,’ Columbus recalled. ‘They cheered and they cheered and they thought it was hilarious. I think I know a lot about comedy, but I don’t, obviously, because I never thought that was going to be considered hilarious.

‘Years later, it’s become this curse. It’s become this thing that I wish it was not there. What’s going through this guy’s mind? He said I was lying. I’m not lying. He said I begged him to be in the movie, but there’s no world I would ever beg a non-actor to be in a movie. But we were desperate to get the Plaza Hotel.’

Columbus paused for a moment before continuing.

‘But it’s there. It’s become an albatross for me. I just wish it was gone.’”

Columbus is referring to Trump’s own glib response to the cameo that he made back in 2023 on his platform, Truth Social. In the post, he wrote, “I was very busy, and didn’t want to do it. They were very nice, but above all, persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history! That little cameo took off like a rocket, and the movie was a big success, and still is, especially around Christmas time. People call me whenever it is aired. Now, however, 30 years later, Columbus (what was his real name?) put out a statement that I bullied myself into the movie. Nothing could be further from the truth. That cameo helped make the movie a success … Just another Hollywood guy from the past looking for a quick fix of Trump publicity for himself!” As Columbus told Business Insider back in 2020, Trump’s involvement in Home Alone 2 was solely based on negotiating rights to film at the aforementioned Plaza Hotel, which Trump owned at the time.

Let this be a lesson that sometimes a means to an end can come back to haunt you 33 years later and counting. Overall though, would it make sense to remove Trump from the film or at the very least make an official director’s cut? Does Santa make room for politics over in The North Pole, even for seven seconds?
