132 citations issued during Berkeley County neighborhood traffic enforcement operation

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — Berkeley County deputies issued more than 100 citations to drivers last week as part of an ongoing effort to crack down on dangerous driving in residential areas.

Deputies handed out 132 tickets for various traffic violations during the four-day enforcement operation, which began May 6. The violations included speeding, driving without a license, texting and driving, and disregarding stop signs, among others.

An additional 113 warnings were issued, and eight criminal arrests were made for driving under the influence, an alcohol violation, disorderly conduct, habitual traffic offenses, and driving under suspension. Six vehicles were also towed.

The patrols were conducted from May 6 to May 9 in the following neighborhoods: Spring Grove,
Fairlawn, Cypress Gardens, Pimlico, Bushy Park, Pinopolis, Thornley Forest, Moss Grove, Sedgefield, Boulder Bluff, and Bonneau Beach.

Sheriff Duane Lewis said the enforcement activity came in “direct response” to concerns received by the agency.

“We will continue to coordinate random enforcement and hold aggressive drivers accountable,” Lewis said. “I encourage our citizens to report concerns to dispatch or by submitting a tip online.”
