Early voting opens for North Charleston special election

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Early voting is underway in North Charleston for a special election to replace two city council members who resigned in February amid a federal corruption probe.

Jerome Heyward (District 5) and Sandino Moses (District 3) were charged Feb. 26 in a year-long public corruption investigation that uncovered several schemes involving bribery, kickbacks, extortion, and money laundering. Both resigned shortly after the charges were announced.

The special election to fill their seats is scheduled for May 27, but voters who don’t want to wait until Election Day can cast a ballot early.

The two-week early voting period opens Monday, May 12, and closes Friday, May 23.

Registered voters within each district can visit the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections Headquarters (4340 Corporate Road) in North Charleston from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays and vote early without an excuse.

Here are the candidates running in each district:

District 3

  • Lou Baker
  • Stephanie Ganaway-Pasley
  • Demetria A McNeil
  • John Peterson
  • Maurice Moe Ray
  • Donnie Singleton
  • Travis Walthall

District 5

  • Danielle Barnett
  • Katesha Breland
  • Christopher Emde
  • Katryna Johnson
  • Carlos Jones
  • Todd Olds
  • Mindy Parish
  • John Singletary
  • Brandon Trollinger

The outcome will be determined by the plurality method, meaning the candidate who earns the most votes will win each seat.

Six other people, including District 1 Councilman Mike Brown, were also charged with public corruption as part of the investigation. Brown’s seat is not included in the upcoming special election, as he did not resign and is currently suspended by the governor.
