Man arrested following deadly overnight shooting in West Ashley

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an overnight homicide in West Ashley, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a home off Wallace Lane shortly after 2:00 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of a shooting. Once there, deputies found a man dead in the kitchen with several gunshot wounds.

Investigators determined the shooting happened following an altercation with the suspect, identified as Derek Johnson.

Johnson was taken into custody at the scene and without incident. He is being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the victim.
