Moncks Corner woman benefitting from Publix donation to Dorchester County Habitat for Humanity

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – Publix Super Markets Charities has donated $50,000 to Dorchester Habitat for Humanity, which will go toward building the home of a single mother in March.

This donation will cover half the home’s cost and is part of the Women Build Initiative.

Over 250 women come together for Women Build to learn homebuilding skills, homeownership programs, and financial coaching. The 2024 home project will be gifted to KC Douglas, a Moncks Corner native, and her son DJ.

“The goal of Women Build is always a celebration of the generosity and forward mobility of women in our community,” said Jones Elliott. “This home build is especially celebratory because KC is the first future homeowner who works full-time at Dorchester Habitat for Humanity.”

Douglas said one of the main reasons she dreams of building her own home after living on second-floor apartments her entire life is so she can bring her grandmother to visit her.

“My grandma can’t do the stairs,” said Douglas. “I go every day to visit her in the nursing home. One day, very soon, I will be able to bring her to my home.”

Douglas’ is a Habitat for Humanity volunteer herself and has spent several Saturdays working alongside others building for future homeowners.

“I am looking forward to Women Build,” said Douglas. “I am in awe of these amazing, strong and giving women. I am forever grateful to them for helping my dreams come true.”
