Could a surf attraction be coming to Berkeley County?

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – It may be a little drive from the ocean, but a place to surf could be coming to the site of a new development in Berkeley County.

The proposed development at the corner of Highway 176 and Black Tom Road could include a mixed-use space, with a primary focus on food and beverage, and office space. There would also be housing and walking paths at the site.

But one element of the project getting some notice from the surrounding community – developers are in the early stages of exploring where a wave surfing facility could be included.

Randy Beavers is one of the developers. He posted about the potential project in a Facebook group for Charleston-area surfers. “We’re average people who want better surf – the technology is here, and we’re taking the initiative to bring it to the Lowcountry,” he said.

Beavers told News 2 that they want feedback from the community during a meeting being held Tuesday night at The Church at Cane Bay (438 Marketplace Drive) to hear from residents about the proposed idea.

Some people in the community said they were concerned about more development nearby. Others, like the employees we heard from at Smoothie King, said they would be interested in trying the surf attraction.

“That sounds next level. Seriously. I’ve never heard any concept of that being publicly available,” said Kyle Lyons.

“I visited the beach, but I’ve never surfed- so that would be awesome to get to learn and everything,” added Alayna Knight. “I’m from like Midwest, so I never really got a chance growing up.”

Tuesday’s meeting will take place between 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
