Oakbrook Elementary principal smooches piggy after students raise more than $17K for a good cause

LADSON, S.C. (WCBD) – Leaders at one Dorchester District 2 school fulfilled a bet with students after they reached a fundraising goal – and this bet involved smooching a little piggy.

Oakbrook Elementary School Principal Kim Boutin and Assistant Principal Dr. Morelisa Sabb-Cordes made a wager with students that if they were able to raise $15,000 or more, they would kiss a pig.

“I’ll do whatever it takes for our Oakbrook bears,” said Principal Boutin.

The students came through on their end and were able to earn more than $17,000 through a booster-thon for a new inclusive playground. The kids earned money for each lap they were able to run as part of a special program.

“It not only gives the students a chance at some exercise but also a chance to put some money toward a good cause,” Principal Boutin explained.

Boutin said it’s important that children of all abilities can enjoy the playground. “We want to make sure recess is a fun time for everyone,” she said.

The pig, named Piggie Smalls, is from Rump Branch Farm in Jedburg.
