Man arrested in deadly Wadmalaw Island shooting

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a Wadmalaw Island homicide.

David Matthew Legare was taken into custody Friday by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) following a shooting that took place on Maybank Highway a week prior.

Deputies responded to a reported shooting on the night of Feb. 16 and found a man, 38-year-old Elijah Jones, suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the scene.

According to the sheriff’s office, investigators later discovered the deadly shooting occurred after a physical altercation between Jones and Legare.

The two stopped fighting and were separated after other parties intervened, according to an affidavit. Legare initially left the scene but returned just over 30 minutes later, and that is when the shooting appears to have taken place.

Legare is being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center on a charge of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
