Haley to deliver remarks in Charleston following reports she will drop out of presidential race

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Republican candidate Nikki Haley is set to speak in Charleston on Wednesday morning following reports that she will suspend her presidential campaign.

The news comes following a sweeping loss on Super Tuesday and sets up a clear path for Donald Trump to win the party’s nomination for president.

Haley, who lost her home state of South Carolina in February, was declared the winner in the District of Columbia over the weekend and Vermont on Tuesday night. But she is leaving the racing having made history — she is the first woman to win a Republican primary.

She insisted on staying in the race through Super Tuesday and crossed the country campaigning in states holding Republican contests. Ultimately, she was unable to knock Trump off his glide path to a third straight nomination.

Haley is expected to deliver remarks at 10:00 a.m.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
