City of Charleston opens free storm parking

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The City of Charleston is opening several parking garages for free for residents to park during the storm.

Charleston may experience another round of isolated strong to severe thunderstorms late Saturday afternoon and could produce heavy rainfall.

Officials ask that residents exercise caution while driving to the following locations to park:

  • Aquarium parking garage – 24 Calhoun Street
  • Queen Street parking garage – 93 Queen Street
  • East Bay/Prioleau parking garage – 25 Prioleau Street
  • 99 West Edge parking garage – 99 West Edge Street
  • Charleston Tech Center parking garage – 997 Morrison Drive

The City of Charleston says cars must be parked after 1 p.m. on Saturday and removed by 10 a.m. on Sunday to take advantage of the free storm parking. They also remind residents that garage openings are for cars only and do not apply to boats, trailers or golf carts.

City officials are helping with flooding issues by installing temporary water pumps at key flood-prone streets. The pumps will help mitigate flooding and expedite drainage. Charleston Police Department is also updating road closures in real time so residents can plan their travel routes.

City officials are also collaborating with Dominion Energy to monitor any reports of downed power lines caused by severe weather.
