Charleston County Sheriff’s Office asks SLED to investigate in-custody death at Al Cannon Detention Center

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- An investigation is underway following an in-custody death at the Al Cannon Detention Center over the weekend.

According to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), a man arrested on charges of receiving stolen goods was being booked into the detention center when he suffered a medical event in the sally port around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities said deputies attempted life-saving measures while waiting for EMS. The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

“Per protocol, the Office of Professional Standards at the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal review,” a news release stated. “CCSO detectives are also investigating.”

The man has not yet been identified by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

The sheriff’s office has also requested an investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), per protocol.
