SLED confirms off-duty Summerville officer shot man during altercation

SUMMERVILLE, S.C (WCBD) – State police confirmed Friday that an off-duty Summerville officer shot an individual involved in an altercation this week.

An off-duty officer with the Summerville Police Department and 39-year-old Michael O’Neal of North Carolina were engaged in an altercation outside a Chick-fil-A off North Main Street Wednesday afternoon.

It is unknown what led to the altercation at this time.

However, during the incident, O’Neal was shot by the officer, according to the State Law Enforcement Division. O’Neal died at the scene.

The officer – not identified at the time of this story – was taken to Trident Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. It was reported by law enforcement that the officer suffered injuries after being dragged by a vehicle.

Summerville PD requested SLED investigate the case. The investigation is ongoing.
