Shots fired after inmate attempted to escape custody in Georgetown County, officials say
GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Shots were fired Saturday after an inmate attempted to escape custody at the Georgetown County Detention Center, officials say.
An inmate who was in a transport unit tried to seize an officer’s firearm, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.
The officer deployed his taser to subdue the inmate; however, the attempt failed and the officer discharged his weapon.
The inmate was not struck, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Carter Weaver has asked the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate.
The inmate remains in custody with charges pending.
