Body recovered of missing swimmer in Beresford Creek

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston Harbor Patrol has recovered the body of the missing swimmer who disappeared Sunday near Daniel Island.

Charleston Harbor Patrol says their units responded to Beresford Creek on Tuesday around 4:55 p.m. and recovered the body of the missing swimmer near a dock on Feldman Court in Wando.

Berkeley County Cororner’s Office has identified the swimmer as Elias Shaw, 62, of Charleston.

As previously reported, officers initially responded to a location off Daniel Island Drive Sunday night for a swimmer in distress.

According to police, they were fishing when they jumped off a nearby public dock. Shaw then struggled against the current, and witnesses lost sight and called for assistance.

Charleston Police Department says they searched the area with assistance from the Charleston Fire Department and a Coast Guard Helicopter.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the Charleston Police Department are investigating.
