Golden Brooks Says Janet In ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Was Mary J. Blige’s Monet’s “Soft Place To Land”
Power has become one of television’s most popular franchises, not only being a launching pad for fresh talent like Michael Rainey Jr., Lovell Adams-Gray, Woody McClain, and more, but also bringing in iconic names in Black Hollywood like Michael Ealy, Wendell Pierce and now Golden Brooks.
Golden Brooks is no stranger to hit television shows, starring on Girlfriends alongside Tracee Ellis Ross, Jill Marie Jones, Persia White, Reggie Hayes, and more.
Now, she can add her recurring role as Janet Stewart on the show. Cassius Life’s Bernard “Beanz” Smalls spoke with Brooks ahead of last week’s episode, which we have broken down here.
In our interview, we discussed Brooks’s joining the cast, working opposite Mary J. Blige, and her upcoming projects.
Golden Brooks Says Joining The Cast of Power Book II: Ghost Was A “Dream Come True”
Golden Brooks already has a well-established acting career, but she was quick to admit joining the Power Book II: Ghost cast and sharing the scenes with Mary J. Blige was a “dream come true” that she pinches herself every day to make sure it’s real.
She continued, “Working with Mary J, watching her work and move through this character and how she is incredibly intentional when it comes to Monet was like watching a masterclass. I mean, she’s such a phenomenal artist. And just the kids, Diane and Drew, and they all just enveloped this level of there’s a level of compassion that you have for these characters just because you know what they’re under, you know the stakes that they’re operating from. And I think that Janet serves as this kind of anchor and voice of reason trying to reel them back in and trying to help Monet from imploding.”
Janet Served As That Person To Remind Monet Where She Came From
In Power Book II: Ghost, Monet is one of those powerful female characters who doesn’t take any bullsh*t and does everything her way to protect her family.
But there is one person who is able to reel her in and remind her that she’s not just the head of a criminal empire; she’s also a mom, and that person is Janet.
She continues, “So I think there’s that dynamic that Monet and Janet have, and I think Janet also serves as a soft place for Monet to land. And I think because there’s that closeness, you do see a softer side of Monet, I’ll say, with Janet, and I think that was really nice to see. Monet is this force where she is trying to keep it all together, and she moves through her life, through emotion. And sometimes that doesn’t always work, but I think Janet is sort of that person who is really, really aiming to keep those kids in alignment with Monet because Monet is just so focused on the, pun intended, power. And we saw that she is sort of losing sight of what is going on with Diana.”
Will We See More of Golden Brooks?
When Power Book II: Ghost ends, it may be the last time we see Janet, but that doesn’t mean it will be the final time we see Brooks.
While not getting into too many details, Brooks revealed she has something in the works, and it’s a space she has not entered.
“I think everyone’s going to be really excited, and it’s going to be fun. And I’m writing actually just to pitch a show, another show, and that looks like it’s getting the green light, it’s moving forward and a lot of things cooking. So I cannot wait to be able to share all these things with you and just keep creating opportunity for other up-and-coming people, and actors. There’s so many great actors out there who needed space to do what they love and more representation of women and women of color. That’s my point of reference every moment I wake up.”
