24 monkeys returned to Beaufort County research facility; 18 still on the loose

YEMASSEE, S.C. (WCBD) – More than two dozen monkeys that escaped a South Carolina research facility have been returned to captivity.

Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard told Yemassee Police on Sunday evening that they had safely recovered 24 of the escaped primates. Another was captured on Saturday, meaning 25 of the 43 monkeys were returned.

18 of the rhesus macaques are still on the run; however police say the animals are situated near the fence line and have bedded down in the trees for the night.

“Veterinarians have been diligently conducting thorough wellness exams throughout the day. Initial reports from the veterinary team indicate that all recovered animals are in good health,” said Yemassee Police.

Anyone who spots an escaped monkey is asked to report their sighting by calling 911. You should not approach or interact with the animal.

The monkeys initially escaped the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center on Wednesday after an employee did not fully shut an enclosure.
