‘Be prepared’ Charleston warns of King Tide flooding this weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Major tidal flooding is expected to impact the peninsula this weekend.

Charleston city officials said significant King Tides are predicted for Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The highest tide on Saturday will hit around 7:46 a.m., with water levels reaching roughly 8.1 feet, and on Sunday around 8:39 a.m. with levels around 7.9 feet.

“Flooding could begin 1–2 hours before and after these times, so stay alert and make adjustments to your plans,” the city said.

Residents are encouraged to monitor flooding and consider moving their vehicles to higher ground to avoid potential damage.

“While no rain is forecasted, the tides are expected to be strong enough to cause serious flooding, which can put you and your car at risk. If you come across flooded roads, remember the safety rule: Turn around, don’t drown. And please, avoid driving around barricades—they’re there for your safety,” city officials said.

Downtown streets that have previously flooded during an 8’ tide include Harbor View Road, Central Park Road, and Battery Island Drive; however, additional streets could be impacted.

A list of road closures will be posted on the city’s website. You can see them in real time by clicking here.
