Unrestrained driver was ejected from car in deadly Stono Bridge crash

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston Police Department released new details Thursday regarding a deadly multi-vehicle crash on the Stono River Bridge.

The incident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Maybank Highway and Headquarters Plantation Road.

An investigation revealed that a sedan traveling east crossed the center line and struck a pickup truck head-on. The driver of the sedan, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

Three people in the truck were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The bridge was closed for several hours.

Charleston Police say the crash remains under investigation and no charges are expected at this time.
