Traffic and stormwater improvements coming to road on James Island

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) — Charleston County is expected to award a contract for the Central Park Road project at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

The project will focus on roadway and drainage improvements along the road due to the area’s issues with flooding and traffic.

The project will begin at the intersection of Central Park and Riverland Drive and continue to the intersection of Flemming Road.

One part of the project residents are excited for is the addition of sidewalks along these roads.

“Sidewalks would be great a way just a way to get up and down the road without having to worry about cars we walk on the road we jump off the road when cars are coming so sidewalks would be awesome,” said Neal Crisp , a James Island resident.

The project will not only focus on roadway improvements, but drainage improvements as well to prevent flooding.
There will be storm drainage improvements, earthwork, erosion control measures and other additional flooding measures.

“Upstream all that storage that’s freed up from these tidal valves will make a difference with the kind of projects we can do upstream in other neighborhoods and other drainage systems that need improvements to increase the flows in those areas,” said John Prorock, the stormwater project manager with Charleston County Public Works.
