Lucy Beckham Coast Guard JROTC Team to compete in Academic Bowl Championship
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – Members of a Mount Pleasant high school’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps have secured a spot in a national academic competition.
Lucy Beckham High School’s Coast Guard JROTC team, comprised of JohnThomas Anderson, Sarah Adams, Isabella Prevuznak, and Greyson Walton, will travel to Washington D.C. this June to compete in the 2025 U.S. Coast Guard JROTC Academic Bowl Championship.
The Lucy Beckham team is ranked among the top two Coast Guard JROTC Academic Bowl teams in the nation, which led them to an all-expense paid trip to the competition held at the Catholic University of America campus.
To earn their spot, team members had to complete rigorous preliminary rounds in subjects like math, science, and language arts.
Not only were they tested in core subjects but also in their grasp of current events, citizenship, leadership skills, and financial literacy.
“The JROTC Leadership & Academic Bowl stands as a nationally recognized competition tailored exclusively for JROTC students,” said Maritime Science Instructor MCPO Joe Melton. “Through participation, cadets imbibe the values of citizenship, engage in academic rivalry, and explore avenues for college opportunities. This platform provides a remarkable avenue for JROTC cadets to demonstrate their leadership and academic prowess.”
