Charleston County inmate dies after medical emergency

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – An inmate being housed at the Al Cannon Detention Center died after experiencing a medical emergency.

Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said deputies, detention center medical staff, North Charleston Fire personnel, and Charleston County EMS attempted life-saving measures at the jail before the inmate was taken to Centre Pointe Emergency for immediate treatment.

The inmate, who has not yet been identified, later died while at the hospital.

Sheriff Carl Ritchie has asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate, and the department’s Office of Professional Standards will conduct an internal review, which follows protocol.
