Scam alert: You will not get a call from the sheriff’s office regarding payment for a warrant or jury duty

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – No, a law enforcement agency will not ask you to pay a fine through Bitcoin, gift cards, or any other money transferring service.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office warned Tuesday about a phone scam that has been circulating in the area. It involves scammers spoofing caller ID to make it appear as though you are receiving a call from the sheriff’s office.

They claim you have an outstanding warrant and demand payment, often through services like Bitcoin, gift cards, or wire transfer services like Western Union.

“THIS IS A SCAM,” the sheriff’s office said. “The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call you to collect payment for a warrant or demand money of any kind over the phone.”

Never give your personal or financial information to someone who calls you unexpectedly, even if they sound convincing. You can call the sheriff’s office directly and ask about outstanding warrants or any unpaid fines.

If you do receive a call like this, hang up immediately if something does not seem right. “Trust your instincts,” the sheriff’s office said.

Try your best not to be fooled by what the caller ID says because scammers can fake it. You can also visit the sheriff’s office in person to verify any information.

“Remember: You cannot ‘pay off’ a warrant with money. That is simply not how the legal system works,” BCSO said.
