If you’ve ever opened TikTok and found yourself 27 videos deep into a “Temu haul” or a “Shein wig try-on,” you may want to tap in. For many of us, Shein and Temu aren’t just apps—they’ve become a lifestyle. Whether we want to admit it or not.
Whether snagging $12 mesh dresses for the club, stocking up on acrylic press-ons, or adding LED strip lights and velvet headboards to carts like it’s nothing, these mega-marketplaces have been holding it down with low prices and big selection. But now, things might be shifting.
Enter new Trump tariffs.

Your favorite Shein and Temu items may start costing more.
Starting April 25, Shein and Temu are raising prices on their sites. The actions are in response to a move by President Donald Trump to drive tariffs on low-cost goods from China to go way up.
Until now, any package under $800 entering the U.S. from overseas was part of a “de minimis” rule—a loophole that let these sites ship directly to you without paying any import taxes. That rule made it easy for Shein and Temu to offer those too-good-to-be-true prices we’ve all come to expect.
Unfortunately for our carts, Trump’s new executive order kills that loophole for Chinese and Hong Kong goods. And since a big chunk of Shein and Temu’s inventory comes from China, both companies must factor in those tariffs—meaning higher prices for you.
Starting May 2, these items will no longer skate by tariff-free. Instead, they’ll be hit with a 145% import tax. Shein and Temu are responding to the new taxes early and starting next week, according to website statements.

If you’re used to buying a week’s worth of looks for the price of brunch, you may start noticing a difference. Everything is likely to see a price bump.
While the companies haven’t dropped exact numbers on how much prices will rise, Temu and Shein dropped near-identical messages to shoppers saying, “Due to recent changes in global trade rules and tariffs… we’ll be making price adjustments.”
But wait, what about the impact on influencers?
Let’s not forget the people who made Shein and Temu go viral in the first place. Content creators—especially Black women creators—have been a major force behind the rise of these platforms, turning low-cost hauls and styling videos into monetized content, affiliate links, and brand partnerships.
Higher prices could mean fewer carts and fewer haul videos. And with less haul content comes fewer clicks, fewer commissions, and potentially less money for some who’ve turned these platforms into sources of income.
So what is next?
Temu and Shein are already trying to soften the blow, encouraging folks to stock up now. Temu promised, “We’ve stocked up and stand ready to make sure your orders arrive smoothly during this time.” Meanwhile, Shein reminded shoppers that they’re “working hard to stay true to our mission: making fashion accessible for everyone.”
However, how long that mission will stay affordable is still in the air.
